The Always-on Display function allows you to view the information you need at any time, even on the locked screen. Translated into Russian, it means “Always on display”. It is mainly used on smartphones with AMOLED and OLED screens from Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi. In the article, we will consider the principle of operation of the function, the procedure for enabling and disabling, giving a list of popular phones with Always on Display.
What is AOD on Xiaomi
The purpose of the function is to constantly display useful information on the device screen without using the phone’s desktop widgets. At the same time, battery consumption is minimal – pixels on OLED and AMOLED displays glow individually, without activating the general backlight. The convenience of using the smartphone also increases, you no longer need to look at the weather or call information only after unlocking the screen. If the smartphone is in a dark case or pocket, an automatic dimming of the displayed brightness is activated, efficiently using the battery.
Some Xiaomi and Samsung models have a reduced refresh rate of the display to further save battery power. Modern smartphones with the Olweiss On Display function enabled consume no more than 2% of the battery capacity per hour of operation in the background.
On which models the function is supported
Xiaomi’s Always on Display technology is supported on many models of smartphones with OLED and AMOLED matrices, but is most often found on near-flagship and advanced smartphones:
- Mi Note 10;
- Mi Note 10 Pro;
- all variations of Mi 9;
- all variations of Mi 8;
- Mi Mix 3 and 5G model;
- Black Shark 2 and Pro version;
- Black Shark Helo;
- all variations of Mi CC9;
- Mi A3.
If we talk about modern smartphones from LG, then Always on Display is available on almost any model after the LG G5. The Samsung brand did the same, starting to massively introduce the technology into smartphones of the main line with AMOLED displays, coming out after the Galaxy S7 and S7 Edge models. You can check the availability of the Always on Display function through the manufacturer’s official website by reading the information in the description and specifications.
Order of use
Even an inexperienced user can enable and configure Always on Display on a smartphone, just follow a simple instruction. For Xiaomi phones:
- go to settings;
- open the “Screen” or “Display” section;
- go to the tab “Automatic display activation”;
- move the slider to the active state in the item “Display is always active”.
The latest Xiaomi models with MIUI 11 and older firmware have the necessary item right in the settings: “Active display and lock”.
Honor smartphones with Always on Display support have a similar algorithm for activating the function:
- go to options from the main screen;
- open the “Blocking” tab;
- find the “Always On Display” item in the list and enable it by moving the slider to the active position.
Some Honor phones also have a separate app to enable AOD. If it is missing, download any analogue from the Google Play Market or another branded store.
Activating AOD on Samsung is even easier and looks like this:
- open the settings;
- enter the inscription “always on display” without quotes in the search line at the top;
- select the item of the same name;
- activate the function by pulling the switch;
- customize display options and add useful widgets if necessary.
Choosing a theme style
Thanks to the fine-tuning of the function in Xiaomi smartphones, it is possible to choose the design and style of displaying information on the display. In the “Automatic display activation” tab, click on the “Style” item, after which all available options will be displayed, including those with animation. In the latest models with MIUI 11 and 12, you can add your own text or image at the expense of a small amount of battery power.
Smartphones of the Korean brand Samsung with AOD support have a unique ability to set looping animation when the screen is locked. To use this function, you need to select an image in the gallery and install it by clicking on “Set as Always On Display image” in the settings. Only small GIFs are supported. If the size is exceeded, the editor will offer to crop the image.
To activate the scheduled mode on Xiaomi phones:
- go to settings;
- open the “Screen” or “Display” section;
- go to “Automatic display activation”;
- go to the “Display” tab;
- select the item “On schedule”;
- set the time period, for example, from 8:00 to 22:00.
Now the Always On Display function will display the necessary information only during the specified period.
Turning off AOD is similar to activating: you need to do the same steps, but on the last one move the slider in the opposite direction or select “Disable”. If a separate application is installed, then the easiest way is to uninstall it, freeing up space on the internal memory of the smartphone.
About Always On AMOLED App
The tweaking of Always On Display technology is not present on all smartphones, so enthusiasts have released an application called Always On AMOLED, which has much more capabilities compared to the standard functionality. The application is free, does not require administrator rights and is available in all stores and websites, including the well-known resource w3bsit3-dns.com. At the first start, you need to give permissions to some functions of the phone for the program to work correctly.
The main page of the application contains basic functionality – to activate Always On Display, just check the box next to “Enable service”. The parameters contain individual items for fine-tuning, for example, “Operating rules”. With their help, the conditions for activating AOD are set: permissible battery charge, time interval, brightness, etc.
The functionality of the application also includes gesture activation. You can configure the activation of Always On Display on swipes or after pressing the volume buttons. The style of displaying the clock, battery charge, date and background image is selected in the “Design” item. There is also a PRO version of the application with a large selection for personalization, but it is paid.
How to enable technology on any model with IPS
There are applications for enabling Always On Display on IPS screens, but this method has two significant drawbacks:
- IPS-matrices are not adapted for continuous display of information, as they are not capable of illuminating individual pixels. Because of this, activating the AOD will consume a lot of the battery.
- Incorrect operation of the function. The screen will often go blank, freeze or slow down during the animation of the exposed image, since the technology is not provided by default in the smartphone.
Always on Display improves usability and makes the smartphone more ergonomic. Almost all flagship models of Samsung, Huawei and Xiaomi, equipped with OLED and AMOLED matrices, are equipped with this function. Newcomers to the mobile device market are just mastering the technology, gradually introducing it into the phones of the main line.
