Xiaomi Quick Charge technology works by increasing the current or voltage. The process is regulated by a special protection system supported by the Qualcomm Snapdragon chipset. Starting with the third generation Quick Charge, the processor also began to receive information about the state of the battery. This allowed the chipset to independently determine the supplied current and voltage. The latest generation of technology has 12 overheating and power surge protection systems. In general, with fast charging, the process is uneven and divided into certain intervals.

Different versions and their features

There are 5 generations of QC technology:

  1. Quick Charge was first released in 2013. Then only flagship smartphones with a Snapdragon processor received fast charging. It charges 45% faster than usual.
  2. In the second generation, the speed increased by 60%. To fully charge your smartphone, you need a 9 V power supply with at least 2 A.
  3. The third generation QC has received an upgrade in the form of intelligent current control. The processor was able to independently select the required voltage for recharging. The new Qualcomm Snapdragon 820, 620, 618, 617 and 430 mobile chipsets have support for Quick Charge 3.0.
  4. The fourth series allows you to charge the battery up to 50% in less than 15 minutes. Available for devices with Snapdragon 835 processor, which is installed in flagship smartphones.
  5. The latest 5th generation charges a 4500mAh phone from 0 to 100% in just 15 minutes. It also uses Qualcomm Battery Saver technology to monitor battery health. Quick Charge 5.0 is supported by Snapdragon 865 and 865 Plus processors.

How to activate or deactivate fast charging

To activate fast charging on Xiaomi smartphones, 2 conditions must be met:

  • the presence of an original power supply unit from a smartphone for 9 Volts and 2 Amperes;
  • official MIUI firmware, preferably the latest version.

If these conditions are met, it is enough to insert the unit plug into the outlet, and the USB cable into a special input on the side of the unit and the smartphone. If the phone supports Quick Charge technology, then the function will turn on on its own, since it is already embedded in the Xiaomi smartphone. Otherwise, normal charging will start.

 

It is impossible to disable Quick Charge, since it is sewn into the shell and turns on automatically when the charger is activated. Some manufacturers have already implemented the shutdown option, but Xiaomi did not do this.

The easiest way to check if fast charging is working is to connect your smartphone to a power bank. When you activate Quick Charge on Xiaomi phones, the bottom of the display will show the inscription “Fast Charging” or a lightning bolt icon in a circle. Otherwise, the battery will be charged as usual, in which the required time increases by 3-4 times. If there is no indication, note the time of full battery charging. With Quick Charge technology, the indicator fills up in less than 50 minutes. Possible problems

Despite the fact that the Quick Charge technology has been around for more than 7 years, sometimes interruptions and malfunctions occur in its operation. Most often, the function does not work due to a damaged cable or power supply. In this case, it is necessary to replace the failed part by purchasing a new one, preferably an original one. Also, Quick Charge may not function due to a software failure of a module that is directly related to the processor.

 

It is not recommended to repair the phone yourself, as there is a high probability of damaging the internal contacts during disassembly.

If Quick Charge does not start after updating the system, rollback to the old version or reinstalling the firmware will help. In this case, you only need to use the official versions from the Xiaomi website. The last of the most common problems is connecting through a non-original USB cable or power supply. In this case, you need to buy voltage-supported accessories.

Is Quick Charge technology harmful to smartphones?

Fast charging technology does not harm the smartphone in any way and does not reduce the battery capacity, as many believe. Battery failure is also not possible if supported accessories and phone are used. For preventive maintenance, you can alternate the use of a power supply unit with a normal and increased voltage, so as not to reduce the battery charge cycles. But in practice, this method will not be effective – the battery of a smartphone is designed for 2-3 years of use, and during this time a new phone is usually already purchased.

Fast charging is harmful only for smartphones without Quick Charge support. High-voltage power adapters supply more voltage than needed, thereby damaging the device’s battery. Standard precautions will not be superfluous: do not place smartphones under dense fabrics while charging to avoid overheating of the module and contacts.

Quick Charge is a useful technology that allows you to quickly charge your smartphone while using quality accessories. For operation, the function must be supported by the manufacturer itself. Xiaomi phones received version 1.0 fast charging back in 2015, starting with the Redmi 2. Xiaomi flagship smartphones come with Quick Charge 5.0 technology, which reduces the full charge time to 15 minutes.
