Xiaomi Redmi Note 9 Pro is the solution for those looking for the best value for money. Despite the competition in the mid-range segment, the Redmi Note 9 Pro remains a high-performance and beautiful smartphone at an affordable price for most. The Note series has helped Xiaomi achieve worldwide popularity. One of the first models, Redmi Note 4, was sold 10 million times per production cycle. In 2019, the Note 7 line of smartphones has become one of the most popular. The novelty has received even more extensive functionality in line with current trends. In the review of Redmi Note 9 Pro, we will consider the design, software and technical equipment of the smartphone, highlighting the advantages and disadvantages of the model.
Advantages and disadvantages of the model
- recognizable design inherent in the Redmi Note series;
- optimized operating shell;
- large display;
- saturated colors;
- high autonomy due to a large battery;
- fast charging;
- USB Type-C connector.
- embedded advertising;
- heats up a lot under loads;
- weak aperture of the main camera.
Modifications by memory size
Xiaomi has released two models of Redmi Note 9 Pro, differing in the amount of internal memory. Configurations with 64 and 128 GB are available to choose from.
Shell MIUI 11
The MIUI proprietary shell is installed on all Xiaomi smartphones, and the Redmi Note 9 Pro is no exception. The device runs the latest version of MIUI 11. The developers also noted that the model will receive an update to MIUI 12. The shell is optimized and has many different functions and settings.
One of the new options available only on the latest version is Mi Share. The technology is somewhat analogous to AirDrop for the iPhone. With this option, users can share photos, videos, and other files with nearby devices. At an early stage of development, the technology allows data to be transferred to smartphones Vivo, Oppo, Realme and Xiaomi. The dedicated ShareMe app is preinstalled on the latest Redmi phones and is available for download in the store.
The Always On Display feature has received an update in MIUI 11. Users can now change the interface options. The option is available only for smartphones with AMOLED display.
The file manager has also changed slightly. The main difference from previous versions is the ability to view files without installing additional applications. For example, you don’t need an application to open a word file. But to change the files, you still have to download the editor.
Dimensions and design
With last year’s Note 7 Pro and Note 8 Pro smartphones, Xiaomi has set a recognizable and unique style. In Redmi Note 9 Pro, the design has been finalized, adding new elements for the convenience of the user. The main difference between the new items is the gradient back panel made of Gorilla Glass 5. This coating not only looks stylish, but also protects the smartphone from scratches and drops from a small height. The included case will help protect against fingerprints and dirt.
The main camera module is located in the center, in the upper part of the case. But instead of the usual vertical arrangement, 4 rear cameras are assembled into a rectangle. The flash is mounted under the cameras. The module itself protrudes slightly from the case and can cling to clothes, but the cover corrects this situation.
Redmi Note 9 Pro does not differ much from previous versions in terms of size and appearance, developing an established design. The phone weighs 209 grams and therefore may seem bulky for lovers of small devices. The case is also splash and dust resistant.
The model is equipped with a 6.67 inch frameless IPS screen with a resolution of 1080 × 2400 pixels. The aspect ratio of 20: 9 allows you to conveniently watch videos and other content. The factory film is glued on the display. The screen functions are standard: brightness, night and dark mode, color temperature adjustment. In the settings, you can also hide the cutout above the display.
The only drawback of the new model is the lack of a high refresh rate. The closest competitors in the face of Realme 6 Pro and Poco X2 have 90 and 120 Hz, respectively.
The external monaural speaker of the phone copes with the reproduction of mid and high frequencies. Lows are almost impossible to catch and in most cases they are absent with this sound quality. The volume does not exceed 88 dB, no distortion occurs at the extreme level. On such a speaker, you can comfortably watch videos and listen to music. A 3.5 mm audio jack and Bluetooth 5.0 are provided for connecting external speakers and acoustic systems.
Compared to last year’s version of the Redmi Note 8 Pro, the new product has hardly received any changes in the characteristics of the camera. The leading sensor is also Samsung ISOCELL Bright GW1, which is installed in the company’s flagship smartphones. The camera shoots at 16 pixels by default with the option to switch to high quality shooting. In normal lighting, the picture is as detailed and juicy as possible.
The macro camera has been improved. Instead of a 2-megapixel camera, a new 5-megapixel camera with autofocus function is installed. They did not change the lens – the aperture of f / 2.4 is enough to create ultra-close-ups in low light.
Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 5.0, NFC and infrared port – Redmi Note 9 Pro has a set of wireless communications standard for smartphones. Using the infrared port, you can even use your phone as a remote control for TV and other equipment through a special application. The tray holds 2 LTE SIM cards. High quality voice communication is ensured by VoLTE and VoWiFi technologies. The sound through the speaker is clear and not clipped by background noise.
The 5000 mAh battery and the Snapdragon 720G chipset provide a high autonomy of the smartphone in different operating modes:
- video at maximum brightness – 16 hours;
- surfing in the browser via Wi-Fi 5.0 GHz with maximum brightness – 12 hours;
- in games – 9 hours;
- conversation – 33 hours;
- music playback – 147 hours.
In addition, Redmi Note 9 Pro received a 30W fast charging function. The battery status is displayed in hundredths of a percent so that you can see how quickly the smartphone is charging. A full charge from 0 to 100% takes about an hour.
Hardware and performance
The phone is powered by the Snapdragon 720G chipset, which allows you to play highly demanding games on high configurations without brakes with a stable frame rate. In games such as PUBG and Asphalt 9, the smartphone produces 30 fps. Memory modules deserve special mention. The test results of data transfer rates show up to 20 thousand megabytes per second. This is 2 times faster than the basic version of Redmi Note 9.
Redmi Note 9 Pro has a super camera, fast charging, good battery life and amazing performance. But besides this, the smartphone boasts a lot of little things and functions. One of them is a low-blue radiation screen, which reduces strain on the wearer’s eyes.
The Redmi Note 9 Pro has a high-precision fingerprint scanner that even recognizes the sides of the pads. The correct positioning allows the finger to naturally fall on the scanner from different angles. The response speed does not exceed 0.5 s.
An interesting feature of the main camera is removing shadows from document photos. The option is made possible by the advanced artificial intelligence of the Snapdragon 720G processor.
Who is the smartphone for?
The Redmi Note 9 Pro is made for those who want a high quality phone at a relatively low price. The smartphone has flagship qualities and is practically not inferior in functions to the main competitor in the face of the Samsung Galaxy A70. The model is also suitable for users who do not like OLED displays due to the constant flickering of the backlight. The IPS screen found in the Note 9 Pro uses a different method to adjust brightness.
Reviews and impressions
Redmi Note 9 Pro has received laudatory reviews from users. Xiaomi was able to create a device with a recognizable design and efficient filling. An excellent IPS display, an 8-core processor, a balanced camera system and an optimized skin – these qualities make the Redmi Note 9 Pro a must-buy. In terms of configuration, you can only find fault with the location of the fingerprint not under the display, but this is an individual moment. It is also upsetting the presence of advertising offers that climb from the main smartphone applications. For example, when you watch a video in the Gallery, you will be prompted to go to YouTube. Of course, advertising can be turned off in the settings, but its presence slightly spoils the impression.
Redmi Note 9 Pro takes qualitatively new heights, continuing the trends of past models. When used, there is no impression of being secondary – the smartphone looks and works like a flagship. In terms of performance and camera capabilities, the phone easily beats last year’s top models and some of the current flagships. But the main advantage of Redmi Note 9 Pro is the price, which is 1/3 of the cost of flagships from other manufacturers.
